Sheikh played an important role in co-founding the Indigenous Library with Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule in 1848. Google said in a statement about Fatima Sheikh “India’s first Muslim woman teacher”.

Sheikh and her brother Usman donated their house to build an indigenous library, which is one of the first schools for Indian girls. Google said in a statement “Here, Savitribai Phule and Fatima Sheikh taught communities of marginalized Dalit and Muslim women and children who were denied education based on class, religion, or gender,”.

Fatima Sheikh took an active part Truthseekers’ Society movement. Google has described Sheikh as a woman who, despite facing overwhelming resistance and insults from members of the dominant caste, remained steadfast.

Google has hailed Fatima Sheikh’s story as “historically overlooked” and said that the Indian government was trying to highlight his achievements in 2014 by “featuring her profile in Urdu textbooks alongside other trailblazing Indian educators”.
