The violence erupted after a class 12 student suicide within the Tamil Nadu city of Kallakurichi. The day before, demonstrators smashed school buses and vandalized school buildings in protest of the incident. Police reported that hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the school and began calling for justice. As tensions grew, Section 144 had to be put in place on the area.

According to reports from the news agency ANI The protesters hurled stones at police vehicles as well as damaged the van, despite the efforts of the police to stop the incident. The report also noted that some policemen suffered injuries.

Tamil Nadu The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin tweeted in Tamil, “The situation in Kallakurichi is grim. The culprits will definitely get punishment at the conclusion of the ongoing police investigation into the student’s death.”

The Chief Minister added, “I have ordered the Home Secretary and the Director General of Police to go to Kallakurichi. I request the public to remain calm by relying on the works of the government.”

Police have said that the student committed suicide by suicide in the campus and, according to a written note the student accused teachers from the school of beating her and requiring students to be in class every day. Police have confirmed that the case in accordance with Section 173 (unnatural death) was filed.
